"The Hotel Del" by Lena Johnson

The Hotel Del Coronado, situated on an island across the bay from downtown San Diego, California is one of my favorite places on earth!  Built in 1888, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977.  This hotel offers luxurious accommodations and has been called "one of the top ten resorts in the world" by USA Today.  The Victorian architecture allows visitors to step back in time to the days of its visionary founders, Elisha Babcock and H.L. Story, who dreamed of building a resort on the sea that would be “the talk of the Western world.”  Publisher Rand McNally has recognized the resort as a spot that has enjoyed  “more fame and historical significance than perhaps any hotel in North America.”

Ten U.S. Presidents have visited and Hollywood has been making movies there for more than a century.  In 1958, Some Like it Hot was filmed at the Del with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.  Adding to its intrigue, is the story of a resident ghost.  On November 25, 1892, Kate Morgan died here and there are reports that she haunts the hotel on a regular basis.
