Paragliding Photos by Lena Johnson
The Torrey Pines Gliderport saw its first flights in 1928. The site has been the premier soaring site for the United States and has been a place of learning for national heroes such as Charles and Ann Lindbergh. Lena Johnson says, "This is one of my favorite places on earth! In these photos, I tried to capture the spirit of the Torrey Pines Gliderport. The place resembles a dramatic dance performance of actors and audience on a larger than life scale. Spectators are seated on benches behind a roped off area. The paragliders take off, soar in the wind over the ocean and cliffs as the spectators sit in muted conversation watching the vibrant colors of the sails rise and fall and intersect with each other over the sea. All one can hear is the wind and the whistles that are blown as the paraglider gives warning that he or she is about to come in for a landing. Time stops and your cares ease away as the sun, the wind and the intensity of color gliding across the sky erases the outside world of frenzy that lies just beyond the Torrey Pines Gliderport boundaries..."
