Idaho Landscapes by Lena Johnson

Idaho is a place of extremes.  Where modern technology meets the rugged, wild west...  Where temperatures can change forty to fifty degrees within the week.  Fog in the morning and dry heat in the afternoon.  After spring rains, the mountains around the Treasure Valley in Boise turn a lush, beautiful green.   Later, they turn brown and catch fire from day after day of one-hundred degree temperatures in July and August.  In the river valleys, the cottonwood and salmon thrive.  On the foot hills that get constant sun and very little rain, the sage brush and grouse is king. The Boise Foothills define the city they surround and provide a striking backdrop that connects valley to ridge with a network of trails, open space, and wildlife habitat. It is not uncommon to see Canadian geese a block or two from the State Capitol downtown.  The antelope come down to feed in the city limits during harsh winters.  The red fox chases a mouse through traffic on a winter day.  Raccoons play in my pond and try to catch my fish as does the great blue heron.  A mountain lion is sighted on the greenbelt.  A badger ran down the sidewalk in front of my house just last week as a family on bicycles did a double take in surprise.  Mink play on the rocks at the river at the city park, chasing each other around and around in play.  And all these things happen just steps away from the door of the factories at Micron and Hewlett Packard where workers toil day and night making parts for our computers and cell phones and managing email service for the corporate office of Merrill Lynch in New York.   Idaho is where nature and technology collide.  Where new subdivisions threaten to drive out herds of antelope on their winter ground.  How do you balance such a thing?  Who wins, who loses?  I cannot tell you the answer to that question.  I only want to show you what Idaho's wild and beautiful side looks like...
