What is a Chromira print?

Chromiras are C prints (chromogenic prints) which is an established term in museum nomenclature.  The Chromira is a Digital Photographic Enlarger that exposes traditional type C photographic paper with LEDs (light emitting diodes). The Chromira uses red, green and blue LEDs, which travel side-to-side directly over the photographic printing material. This assures that each dot is round, with no elliptical shape distortion near the edges, as has been experienced with previous laser-based printers.  The Chromira produces fine art prints of unparalleled quality. Unlike large format inkjet output, there are no inks used that can smudge or fade and there is no "dot pattern."  The photo paper is then processed in RA-4 chemistry, creating a continuous-tone, true photographic print. The Chromira is different from inkjet printers because it exposes photographic paper (no ink is involved), whereas inkjet printers physically lay ink on paper or canvas.  Chromira prints have more brilliance, richer blues and cleaner colors and are sharper than Lightjet digital prints.  See more info Contemporary Photography Chromira Process

What is archival paper?

Acid free and lignin free paper that lasts longer than other papers and holds color well is referred to as archival paper.  With a quality lifetime of 100 years or longer, archival paper is often used for critical, permanent records that must be kept for many years.  Lena Johnson uses archival materials exclusively to produce her contemporary photography work.

What is the process called Piezography® for Black and White Photography?

It is a commercial printing process for black and white photography invented by Jon Cone in the year 2000.  The Cone Piezography® Inks are special greyscale-only inks, made specifically for black and white photography printing. Instead of using black ink and color inks, the Cone inks use a series of black inks of varying intensity that allow for an extremely long tonal range and very subtle renderings of tone. The inks are carbon based, so they are some of the longest lasting inks available.  See more info on Black and White Photography produced with Piezography

What are Giclée fine art prints?
The word "giclée" (pronounced zhee-clay) is French, meaning "to spray"
and was given to the method of plate-less fine art printing developed in 1989. Images are scanned and stored digitally then sent to a high-resolution printer. Giclee prints have become renowned world wide due to the super fine resolution of 2880 dpi and attention to detail. This technology produces incredible detail and brilliant color.  The giclee printer uses a continuous stream of minute ink droplets to layer the ink onto the paper or canvas thus creating the look and feel of original fine art.  Lena Johnson's contemporary photography is also available in limited edition giclée prints on archival papers and canvas.

Does the quality vary among Giclée prints?

Absolutely!   There is a proliferation of open-edition, cheap mass-produced giclee prints on the market that will never appreciate in value and that may fade and/or discolor within a few years.  The best insurance against paying too much for a product is EDUCATION.  Know what you are buying.  This is an issue in which the consumer needs to ask questions of the artist.  What type of printer was used to produce the giclee?  Is the paper archival?  Is it an open or limited edition?  What kind of longevity can I expect?  Lena Johnson's contemporary photography prints are ALWAYS printed with the highest quality archival inks on archival photo papers and/or canvas with a lifetime of 100 years or more.

How long do giclée prints last?
Longevity is totally dependent upon the type and quality of ink, paper and or canvas used.  Only the highest quality Epson archival inks and archival papers are used to produce fine art giclee prints by Lena Johnson.  Recent tests have shown these methods to yield results with a longevity of at least 200 years or more.

What kind of printers are used to produce Lena Johnson's Giclee prints?
Professional Epson printers utilizing UltraChrome K3 inks, MicroPiezo AMC print head technology and a new ultra modern photographic screening technology are used to produce Lena's work.  The advanced 8 color pigment based ink system is laid down at up to 2880 dots per inch onto photographic paper, canvas or watercolor paper. The superior scratch resistance, from improved pigment and resin chemisty, combined with professional print permanence ratings as high as 200 years ensure true professional archival quality prints.
