Black and White Photography using Piezography Process

How do you pronounce Piezography®?
Peas (as in the kind that grow in a garden)-ah-graph-ee. Peas-ah-graph-ee. Piezography®.

Who invented Piezography®?
Jon Cone has been involved with professional inkjet printing systems since the early 1990's, using commercial IRIS large-format printers. In 2000 he commercially introduced a system that he calls Piezography (abbreviated here and many other places to Piezo).

How do Piezography® prints compare with Iris prints?
They are much better! Black and white photography produced with the Piezography process appear to be continuous tone, due to the extremely small (and often invisible) dots.

What papers are used for Piezography®?
In most cases, fine art papers are used for black and white photography printing such as Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308, Concorde Rag, and Somerset Photo Enhanced Velvet--these are all "art" papers with varying amounts of surface texture.

What are Cone Piezography® Inks?
The Cone Piezography® Inks are special greyscale-only inks, made specifically for black and white photography. Instead of using black ink and color inks, the Cone inks use a series of black inks of varying intensity that allow for an extremely long tonal range and very subtle renderings of tone. The inks are carbon based, so they are some of the longest lasting inks available. They are specially engineered with different tints, like selenium tone and warm tone, to approximate the look of traditional darkroom black and white photography processes and produce a very pleasing tint. Because of the ink formulation, Piezography inks only work with fine art papers and some canvases. They do not work with photo surface papers.

How do Piezography® prints compare with Epson 9600 B&W prints?
Piezography® printers are able to record a wider range of tones than the Epson 9600. Both the Piezo24 and Piezo44 use neutral inks with a long lifespan. The ConeTech Selenium Tone Inks with Museum Black (used on the Piezo44) are rated to be the most archival of any Quadtone inkset for the production of black and white photography.  Printed on fine art papers, Piezography® prints look very similar to platinum prints. Piezography® inks do not work well with glossy paper.

How archival are the black and white photography prints?
PiezoTones are designed to perform without perceptible fade and color shifting in equivalent tests which give greater than 100 year longevity ratings.
