"Anatomy of a Hotel" by Lena Johnson
From its dazzling green silhouette of hexagonal towers, the Wyndham Hotel at Emerald Plaza is a sparkling jewel in the heart of downtown San Diego. Inside is a plethora of visual delights that kept me moving through the space for three days seeking one optical adventure after another. Green prisms are suspended within the towers overhead. Mirrors mounted on the hexagonal surfaces reflect marble, granite, plants, people, artwork, fountains, elevators, stairs and escalators that confound the senses and challenge expectations about what a hotel can be. I chose to shoot with natural light so that the dramatic shadows created by the sunshine streaming in overhead could be maintained in the final images. All images in this project are real. I have not added or deleted elements of any shape or size. As sunshine streamed through the green prisms overhead, creating a dramatic field below of shadow and light, I created compositions of optical illusions that are naturally present in the space. I have created a sense of hyper-reality with saturated color and contrasting elements to draw the view into each image; to engage them in an adventure and exploration of their own. Choosing to emphasize the myriad of details that are inherent in the architectural design of this building, I am hopeful that the viewer can understand the complexity and intention of its design. |
